Board proclaims National Public Works Week, honors public‑works staff and schedules SB1 road town hall

The Imperial County Board of Supervisors declared the week of May 2025 as National Public Works Week and recognized Public Works staff and volunteers during the May 20 meeting.

A board proclamation described public works professionals as “of vital importance to sustainable and resilient communities” and celebrated the department’s divisions. The board recognized multiple public‑works employees, naming Victor Victorano as Employee of the Month from Public Works, and presented service‑anniversary recognitions to staff with 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of service.

Public Works managers Veronica Tondo and Claudia Velades told the board they are holding SB1 community outreach meetings to gather residents’ priorities for road repair and other local infrastructure needs. Tondo said SB1 funds can be used for paving and other infrastructure such as traffic signals and that the department has provided bilingual flyers and will accept written input via the clerk’s office and direct email.

Tondo invited residents to a joint County/City community meeting in Imperial on May 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Hall to present projects and collect community priorities. Board members asked staff to coordinate additional meetings in other districts; Public Works said it would also present in Calexico and Locotillo.

Supervisor Peggy Price and other supervisors praised the county road crews and noted recent paving activity in Sealy and elsewhere. Supervisor Price requested that Public Works immediately contact Caltrans to address repeated fatal collisions on Highway 86; Public Works said it meets regularly with Caltrans and would add Highway 86 safety concerns to the agenda and initiate direct outreach.

The proclamation and recognitions were adopted by roll call during open session.
