PBC hears update on Stormont Vail hospital renovation, $20 million program and timeline

Members of the county’s PBC (Public Building Committee) heard a multi-point update on renovation work at the local hospital campus and discussed how the $20 million pooled funding and the project timeline affect outstanding items.
Jeff Klein, the project representative, told the committee the major mechanical work on radiology and the SPD kitchen air handlers is complete and that boiler replacements and the MAB 1 heating/cooling and electrical work are underway. Klein said the contractor American Boiler would tune a newly installed burner and that the older superior boiler would return to service alongside two new boilers. He also said chilled-water equipment has long lead times and that a major electrical rework will be time-consuming, mapped at roughly 600 days and estimated at about $2.8 million.
Committee members discussed that the original assessment which drove the $20 million commitment dates to 2019–2020 and that rising costs have already created gaps between estimates and 2025 prices. "There was $20,000,000, and once we get to $20,000,000, we're done," Klein said, adding the project has until January 2028 to complete the agreed scope and that Stormont Vail will decide whether to undertake additional work and at whose expense after that point.
Committee members asked the hospital team to produce a clearer list of what items are likely to be left off if the $20 million cap cannot cover all assessed needs. Several PBC members suggested the committee draft a letter asking the hospital for an itemized status showing which assessment items cannot be completed under current budget and which remaining items Stormont Vail considers essential to its operations.
Committee members also discussed capital planning for items likely to fall outside the $20 million envelope, such as exterior parking lot work, and the need for continued oversight to ensure that funds are focused on building-systems projects that keep the facility operational.
No formal vote or new appropriation was taken at the meeting; members asked for a written follow-up and suggested the PBC draft a letter to the hospital’s Tim Schultz requesting clarity about which assessment items will be completed within the program budget and which will not.
