At Monday’s meeting of the Hancock County School District board, members discussed revisions to the student organizations policy and approved several consent-agenda items, calendar highlights and an administrative relief motion for two severe-weather days.
Board member Miss Holliday raised questions about policy JAB on equal access student organizations and suggested a parent-permission form for extracurricular clubs. “I was just wondering, should we get approval, like a permission slip signed by parents to to join a club?” Holliday asked. She emphasized cost transparency for parents and suggested a simple form listing clubs and fees so families are aware of financial obligations.
District staff responded that picture and media consent forms are already collected at registration and that the handbook is the controlling document; the staff agreed to include links to the handbook in the online policy book so board members and parents can find procedures noted in policies. The board clarified that the current agenda item (item 34) was a review and would return for approval at a later meeting: “That 34 is just to review the policy... so we'll present it at the next meeting for y'all to approve that,” a board member explained.
On the consent agenda the board moved several routine policy bundles. Miss Holliday made the motion and Mister Lavin seconded; the chair called for the vote and said, “All in favor, motion carries.”
Members also approved an amended motion to add two administrative relief days for severe weather, specifically Jan. 23, 2025 and Jan. 24, 2025, and to approve related administrative relief measures.
The board received a calendar update and voting summary for the 2025–26 school calendar. Staff reported that 2,307 people voted in the district calendar survey: “957 parents voted on it. 882 students, 417 staff members, and 51 community members,” a staff member summarized. Calendar highlights noted that 68% of voters chose October 31 as a teacher workday and that the district plans school-board tours on Feb. 24 and secondary visits in March.
Why it matters: The student-club policy and handbook linkage affect parent notification and consent for extracurricular participation; calendar and severe-weather decisions determine school schedules and operations. The board did not finalize policy JAB at this meeting but directed staff to provide forms and links for review before approval.
