Commission adopts rewritten flood damage prevention ordinance and new permit fees

The Huron City Commission approved a rewritten flood damage prevention ordinance on second reading and adopted a companion resolution establishing fees for a newly added variance process, city planner Barry Cranston said.
Barry Cranston told the commission the rewrite is extensive and intended to bring the city’s ordinance into compliance with federal regulations and state emergency‑management requirements. “This is a major rewrite for this ordinance,” Cranston said, noting the update adds numerous definitions and incorporates a variance process to align with federal appeal procedures.
Cranston said the variance process is the primary procedural change; historically the city did not permit variances in the floodplain, he said. The companion resolution sets a fee to offset the city’s advertising and administrative costs for the new variance application and aligns that fee with the city’s annual rate resolution.
Commissioners discussed the ordinance briefly; no public comments were recorded. The commission voted to adopt the ordinance on second reading and approved the fee resolution in separate roll calls.
