Gatesville ISD promotes Jose Aguirre to head football coach, adds assistant athletic duties

The Gatesville ISD Board of Trustees on Tuesday appointed Jose Aguirre as head football coach and assistant athletic director, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of Aaron Hunter.

Superintendent and board members told the meeting Aguirre was an internal candidate with experience as defensive coordinator and experience in other Texas districts. Trustees said Aguirre has been active at school events and credited him with contributing to the program’s recent successes.

Jose Aguirre told trustees he plans to prioritize students and academics. “Number one, it's always been about the kids. Always,” Aguirre said, adding he intends to “invest into every single program” and emphasize academics alongside athletics.

The board said the position was posted after Hunter’s resignation and that Aguirre applied and was selected following a review of internal and external candidates. Trustees moved to approve the appointment; Board member Calvin made the motion and Board President Charles Alderson seconded. The board asked if there were further questions and then voted in favor.

Supporters who spoke at the meeting described Aguirre as organized and committed; one supporter said he is “all in” and “very organized.” The district introduced Aguirre’s family at the meeting. Aguirre thanked his wife and described the family’s decision to remain in the community.
