County to apply for Edward Barn Memorial JAG to replace remaining tasers; reimbursement risk flagged

Montezuma County staff told commissioners on Feb. 24 they seek approval to apply for a Edward Barn Memorial Justice Assistance Grant of $161,187.60 to replace the remaining half of the county’s taser devices.

Mr. Talley presented the request and said the county received a similar award last year for half of the tasers. County staff confirmed they have not yet been reimbursed for that prior purchase and are processing reimbursement paperwork.

Robert, a county staff member assisting on the grant, said the new request is “very similar” in amount to last year’s award. Staff recommended applying for the grant but exercising caution if awarded: they advised against placing large equipment orders before reimbursement is confirmed and suggested ordering in smaller batches to reduce financial exposure.

“If we don’t think we … have any concerns about reimbursement, [be] careful about putting the county out for that funding,” Robert said. Commissioners and staff noted that even if awarded, equipment ordering dates are unlikely to occur before October, giving time to confirm reimbursement from the prior award.

Staff also described replacement and warranty details: the proposed tasers come with five‑year warranties and the vendor provides training cartridges and replacement cartridges for use and training. County staff said deputies fire training cartridges as part of certification and that cartridges cost about $40 each; county staff estimated about 10 taser “events” per year.

Commissioners did not record a formal vote; staff said they would proceed with the grant application and will manage purchasing to limit county exposure until prior reimbursements clear.
