Colonial SD outlines Summer Academy schedule and extended school year plans

Mister Bassetti provided the curriculum committee with an update on Summer Academy 2025 and the district's Extended School Year (ESY) schedule during the Feb. 10 meeting.
Summer Academy 2025 is scheduled for July 8 through July 31, operating Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will serve Colonial students entering grades 1 through 8. Grades 1'4 will be housed at Plymouth Elementary, and grades 5'8 will be housed at Colonial Middle School. The program will focus on math and ELA, include daily activities and guest presenters, and provide transportation and meals for participating students. The district reported postings for staff were live about seven days before the meeting; the advertised openings include two coordinator positions (one elementary, one middle) plus instructors and support staff. Summer Academy enrollment cutoffs will use the same student performance data used the prior year, with some variability for invitations.
The district's Extended School Year runs July 1 through July 31 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and serves students with IEP needs across grades K through 12. ESY staffing will include lead teachers (elementary and secondary), special education teachers, instructional assistants, behavioral aides and a school nurse. A district representative said last year more than 100 students attended ESY and that she expects similar or higher participation this year. ESY includes IEP'related services such as occupational and physical therapy.
Both Summer Academy and ESY are described as contingent on final board approval and on completion of staffing. The committee asked about locations and capacity; presenters confirmed the listed sites and that staffing posts are active. Committee members asked follow'up questions about program promotion and logistics; presenters said transportation and meals will be provided and that postings for staff were already live.
No formal committee vote was recorded; Summer Academy and ESY were presented as agenda items to be referred to the full board for approval.
