The Leander City Council on Feb. 6 approved staff recommendations to submit two preliminary applications to the Texas Department of Transportation’s 2025 Transportation Alternatives (TA) call for projects: the city’s ADA transition plan and a Safe Routes to School plan.
Executive Director of Public Works Allison explained TxDOT is allocating funds for 2027–2029 and that sponsors may submit two preliminary applications; TxDOT will select one to advance to a full application due in June. Staff said the ADA transition plan is a non‑infrastructure self‑evaluation covering facilities, rights‑of‑way and sidewalks; the Safe Routes to School plan analyzes conditions within a half‑mile of schools for sidewalks, crosswalks and multimodal needs. The council voted unanimously to approve the submittal and authorized the city manager to execute necessary documents.
Council members said both proposals are important local priorities. Staff will submit the preliminary materials to TxDOT by the Feb. 21 deadline if the state qualifies the applications for the next stage.
