Russell said Maggio isolated the student, summoned school security and police backup and engaged in verbal dialogue, positioning himself in the egress doorway and working to de-escalate the situation.
“Officer Maggio was able to deescalate the student over the course of several minutes,” Councilman Jeffrey R. Russell said in the meeting. Russell asked that a letter of accommodation be placed in Maggio’s personnel file.
Russell framed the request as recognition of positive police actions; he said he was respectfully submitting the letter to the director of public safety, Timothy Jackson, and requested it be part of the officer’s permanent record.
