Planning commission presents housing market assessment; councilor urges local focus

The Jamestown City Council heard a report that the planning commission met Jan. 21 with the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth to review a housing market assessment covering county demographics and development trends, with emphasis on Jamestown and Dunkirk.
A presenter told the council the briefing included a PowerPoint and a substantial demographic review going back to Feb. 2010 and suggested the countywide work had a heavier emphasis on North County than on Jamestown. The presenter said the planning commission will forward the materials to the council and recommended posting the presentation to the city website so residents can review it.
A staff member said the study is already posted on the Department of Development’s webpage. Another participant, who said they serve on the housing committee with the partnership, noted that some wind and other development projects in other areas are being led by organizations outside the county partnership but confirmed the partnership and city staff are working on local development projects.
Councilors asked that the information be made available to the public and expressed interest in seeing how the study’s findings apply to Jamestown.
