Monroe school board approves timeline and survey for superintendent search, plans three community forums

Florida School Boards Association consultants, including Dr. Deborah Pace and Andrea Messina, told the board the search portal will centralize applications, community feedback forms, semifinalist and finalist materials, and written and video responses from finalists. Messina said applications and candidate materials will remain on the portal because they are public records under Florida law.
The board approved launching the online surveys Feb. 3 if the board finalizes the timeline at its next regular meeting. Consultants recommended three in-person community forums: Coral Shores High School on Feb. 11, Marathon High School on Feb. 12 and Key West High School on Feb. 13, all at 6 p.m., plus a virtual student focus group on Feb. 12. Consultants said the online survey historically draws many more responses than in-person forums.
Search organizers described the semifinalist and finalist steps: semifinalists will submit written and video question responses, which will be posted on the portal; the board will then identify finalists, who will participate in community meet-and-greets and in-person interviews. The board was asked to reserve Wednesday, April 30 through Friday, May 2 for on-site interviews and meet-and-greets across the Upper Keys, Marathon and Key West. Consultants said candidates would likely travel in on the day before interviews to allow tours and preparation.
Board members discussed logistics including whether administrators may attend forums and how to handle administrators' participation (consultants advised administrators can attend but would be acting as community members). The board also agreed that any school buildings used for public events need an on-site administrator for building access.
Action: the board voted to accept the search timeline and to approve the survey at the Jan. 28 meeting. Consultants said the portal and survey materials will be posted if the board confirms the timeline at the next meeting and provides final approval for survey languages and distribution.
What happens next: consultants will post the approved survey and launch outreach materials in three languages (English, Spanish and Haitian Creole), begin collecting responses, convene the student focus group and run the portal with semifinalist and finalist materials as the recruitment proceeds.
