Council hears updates on Main Street work, Maple Street tie-ins, Memorial Park bids and childcare outreach

Town staff reported progress and next steps on several capital projects and community initiatives during the regular meeting; no formal council action was taken on these items.

Public works and project staff reported that Main Street water-line replacement is complete aside from a few punch-list items related to fire hydrants, and that the town received approximately $2.7 million in July 2024 related to the Main Street project. Iron Mountain completed water-line installations on Maple Street and was completing tie-ins; staff said paving and final restoration are expected when weather allows and consistent with NCDOT paving contracts.

Staff said Memorial Park bids are due the following Thursday at 2 p.m.; five contractors pulled plans and staff expected at least three bids, with results to be presented at the council retreat. Wonderland Trail repair work began (gabion basket installation) and a FEMA site visit was scheduled; additional bid packages for remaining work will be developed with FEMA and contractors.

Town staff also summarized a regional childcare legislative day hosted in the High Country, which included state-level staff and lawmakers and a tour of the town's childcare academy; staff said the visit showcased the academy and helped highlight childcare challenges and potential state-level assistance.

Councilmembers thanked public works crews for snow removal and rescue efforts and noted parking adjustments on Main Street will be discussed at the retreat. Staff said more detailed project timelines and funding options will be presented at the retreat.
