Fishers engineering staff briefed council on congestion and safety at the roundabout at 96th Street and Allisonville Road at the Jan. 13 meeting and outlined near‑term steps to reduce backups and crashes.
Ted Mackie, director of engineering, said the intersection is carrying diverted traffic from construction on I‑465 and I‑69. Mackie said detours and a closed ramp have increased volumes at the roundabout, and preliminary data show up to a roughly 20% increase in traffic volumes tied to detour traffic. Mackie described common crash patterns at the site as failure to yield and illegal lane changes when drivers attempt to make prohibited left turns from the outer lane.
Planned adjustments: Mackie said the city will (1) install new overhead signage before the roundabout to clarify lane assignments, (2) improve pavement markings for better sight distance, (3) adjust signal timings on nearby approaches to produce larger gaps for roundabout entries, and (4) complete planned light‑pole installations to improve nighttime visibility. Staff expects to collect updated vehicle counts and return results within about a week to refine adjustments.
Longer term: Mackie said staff believe the roundabout design is appropriate for typical traffic conditions but noted the facility is stressed during peak detour periods. He also said work at nearby corridors (including 116th Street and Allisonville improvements slated to start in summer 2025) will change traffic patterns and that staff will apply lessons from current operations as other roundabouts come online.
