The Lake Oswego School District 7J Board of Education voted to approve an annual notice declaring the potential for a reduction in force (RIF) for the coming year, a procedural step the administration said carries more weight this cycle because of the district's budget gap.
Assistant superintendent (presenter) said the notice is an annual requirement and that the district is within the timelines required by each bargaining association for notification. "We do this every year in January. It is a notice for potential reduction in force, and, unfortunately, this year carries a bit more weight than it has in years past," the presenter said.
During the discussion board members asked about supports for affected staff if reductions occur. Administration said outside Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services and internal supports are available; association representatives in the room were also asked to share any additional resources with staff.
Director Clinton moved to approve the potential reduction in force notice; Director Hartman seconded. The board voted in favor with no recorded opposition and the motion passed.
Administration said it will continue to work with bargaining associations and keep the board updated through the spring as specific reduction decisions are finalized.
