Centreville — The Centreville Town Council on Jan. 2 approved Ordinance 13‑2024, a reorganization of penalty provisions throughout the town code, and Resolution 19‑2024, which sets the municipal infraction fine amounts.
Town Attorney Sharon Van Emberg said the changes primarily reorganize penalty language so fines progress from lowest to highest amounts; she noted small substantive changes such as reclassifying the single‑use plastic bag violation to a minor fee category. Council members said the previous arrangement left inconsistent penalties—some minor offenses carried higher fines than more serious infractions.
Council member Huffer, Council Vice President Kiel and Council member Wirth recorded affirmative votes during the roll calls for the ordinance and the resolution. Council discussion included comments that the town needs to begin enforcement of the bag ban now that fines have been clarified and reduced from their prior levels, so enforcement will be feasible.
Resolution 19‑2024 was presented as the companion document that lists specific dollar amounts; the town clerk provided proof of publication for Ordinance 13‑2024 in the Bay Times Record Observer on Dec. 13, 2024.
