Historic Preservation Commission reports CLG activity, seeks outreach and survey funding

The Historic Preservation Commission presented its annual Certified Local Government (CLG) report at Marion’s Jan. 7 work session, summarizing program activity, vacancies, outreach challenges and goals.
The commission has met monthly since 1999, operates as a five‑member board and oversees three historic districts—Bunker Street, Uptown and Terrace Park—and nine nationally registered properties, speakers said. The commission recently completed a partial demolition review of the former Marion Methodist Church classroom wing and has performed section 106 review on a project at Casino and Highway 13.
Presenting the report, staff member Dave said CLG status provides access to grant opportunities and peer networks in Iowa, which has among the largest CLG memberships. He said filling commission vacancies and rebuilding public engagement since the pandemic remain the program’s main challenges and that commissioners hope to resume outreach activities tied to uptown revitalization.
Looking ahead, the commission wants to continue sensitive review of development near historic districts, update demolition review of structures more than 50 years old when federal or state funding is involved, attract new members and plan another historic survey—likely of the Irish Hill neighborhood—once budget authority is identified. The commission meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 a.m.
No formal council action was recorded on the annual report during the work session.
