The Estacada Parks and Recreation Commission discussed preliminary plans for a proposed Founders Day celebration in May at its Aug. 28 meeting, including locations, partnering commissions and the city’s historical collections.
Commissioners said Jerry (a resident/organizer referenced in the meeting) asked the commission to lead planning for a large Founders Day event in May. Possible sites discussed included Foster Farm (near the farm store), city hall, downtown or local parks. Commissioners discussed activities that could reflect local history: a pop-up exhibit of historical photos or artifacts, pioneer-era demonstrations, community dances and demonstrations of period crafts.
Staff and commissioners noted that many of Estacada’s historical items are held by the Clackamas County Museum in Oregon City. Commissioners discussed contacting the county museum about lending items or coordinating a traveling exhibit.
To organize the event, commissioners proposed a small cross-commission subcommittee comprised of volunteers or representatives from other commissions (arts, DEI, chamber or business groups) to provide oversight and central coordination. Commissioners suggested the DEI lead a summit of commission representatives to recruit volunteers and define responsibilities.
What this means: Commissioners requested staff follow up with the Clackamas County Museum, survey commissions for volunteer representatives and bring location options and capability assessments to a future meeting for further planning.
