Board ratifies NEA contract, approves early-childhood vendor; pay schedule clarified

The Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education on Sept. 23 approved a ratified agreement with the National Education Association, KCK (the district—s teachers— bargaining unit) for the 2025–26 school year and approved a contract with Kafuro Way, executive director of early childhood programs, as recommended by district staff.
Board members voted to ratify the NEA-KCK agreement and discussed payroll timing: staff said the updated pay rates will appear on paychecks beginning Oct. 15 and retroactive pay for the negotiated increases will be processed by the Oct. 30 paycheck at the latest. Superintendent and district negotiators said retro amounts will be calculated back to the start of the fiscal year (July 1) where applicable; for teachers the effective start date may align with their contract start (for example, some teacher contracts begin in early August).
Board members also approved a contract with Kafuro Way as recommended by the district—s early-childhood office. Both approvals were moved, seconded and passed on roll call.
The board and administration encouraged staff with placement or payroll questions to contact Human Resources. During the meeting the board named Aaron Watkins as the HR staff member to receive inquiries about salary placement or scale placement questions.
