County reports more than $972,000 in timber-auction sales; spruce-tip sales down

Coonton County staff presented the second-quarter timber-auction results to the board on May 27, 2025, reporting sale proceeds and market observations.
The county reported selling just over 31,000 cords of timber at the May 7 auction for a total sale value of $972,000. The county also sold just under 275,000 decorative Christmas-tree spruce tips at the same auction; those sales contributed to a combined sale value of just over $1 million for the offering. County staff said prices for spruce tips were down from last year (about $0.50 per piece in the May sale versus $0.65-$0.70 per piece last year). Aspen prices at the auction averaged $38.16 per cord, up from just under $31 per cord in January but slightly lower than the May 2024 average by roughly a dollar per cord.
Staff described market dynamics including reduced supply from parts of Canada and favorable harvest conditions last winter that enabled higher spruce harvest volumes. The county also noted the annual outage will limit wood deliveries to the island for one week.
The presentation was informational; the board received the report and no action was required.
