Staff recommends changing overnight-travel policy to grades 9–12; seeks one-year exception for award-winning choir

District staff told the board they reviewed the policy that currently allows eighth graders to travel overnight and recommended amending it so overnight travel would apply to ninth through twelfth graders only.
Sherry (staff) said principals generally supported the change and that most middle schools favor restricting overnight trips for eighth graders. Staff noted the special case of an eighth-and-ninth-grade girls’ choir (the Trouble Singers) that has an established annual overnight state competition; staff recommended allowing that trip to proceed this year and grandfathering any pre-planned, recognized performance travel while changing the policy for future trips.
Board members asked for clarifying information about other exceptions previously allowed (for example, ROTC travel and certain international exchange trips), and staff said the proposal includes options for limited exceptions where programs are historically structured for younger-grade participants. Staff asked the board for direction; no final policy vote occurred at the Feb. 24 meeting.
