The City Council on Jan. 13 approved a budget adjustment to reallocate funding from the Yucaipa Boulevard project to complete the Oakland Road widening project and to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Thirteenth Street and Oakland Road.
Fermin Preciado, addressing item 4, said the Oakland Road project has been in the city’s capital improvement program for several years and is being constructed in phases; phases 1 and 2 were completed in 2018 and 2019. He clarified the current phase’s limits run from Colorado Street southwest across the freeway to Outer Highway 10 South.
Why it matters: the project includes roadway widening, a traffic signal at Thirteenth Street and Oakland Road, and improvements required by development at that intersection. Preciado told council the developer agreement tied to the private project prioritized installation of the signal; poles and equipment were already on site. He also said the development includes a fuel station, convenience store(s), car wash and a proposed 96‑room hotel.
Councilmembers had asked for a brief presentation after public comment from nearby residents who asked whether “widening of Colorado Street” was planned; staff clarified the widening is of Oakland Road and the signal location and schedule were imminent. Council voted to approve the budget reallocation and proceed with the project.
Ending: Staff said the signal will be installed in the near future; funding for the current phase will come from a reallocation of the Yucaipa Boulevard project funds to complete the work and to fulfill city obligations tied to the adjacent development.
