North Lauderdale, Fla. — The City Commission on Feb. 11 tabled consideration of a two‑year extension of the city’s federal lobbying agreement with Becker & Polyakov PA and asked staff to return with a clearer accounting of the firm’s monthly activities and an itemized cost history before taking further action.
Background and commission direction
City Manager Sargent and staff explained the city has operated on annual contracts for lobbying services and that Becker serves as the city’s federal lobbying representative in Washington, D.C., while another firm covers Tallahassee matters. The current annual contract is $60,000; the proposed extension would have kept the price level for two years and offered renewal options.
At the Feb. 11 meeting, commissioners requested a more substantive monthly report from Becker describing what offices and committees the firm met with, a history of grants or appropriations that resulted from Becker’s work, and a consolidated accounting of fees and outcomes. Commissioners then voted unanimously to table the extension until March 11 to allow staff time to gather the requested documentation.
Why it matters
The contract funds advocacy that can produce federal appropriations or grant assistance. Commissioners said they want stronger written evidence of measurable outcomes and monthly activity summaries before committing to a multi‑year contract.
Next steps
Staff said it will obtain monthly activity reports and an itemized history of fees and grants/appropriations attributable to Becker’s work and will return the item for decision at the March 11 meeting.
