North Lauderdale, Fla. — The City Commission on Feb. 11 authorized repairs and rehabilitation work on two city water storage tanks after a required five‑year inspection identified corroded piping and circulation issues.
Public Works staff recommended awarding a purchase order to Crom Coatings & Restoration in the amount of $212,513.05 and establishing a $15,000 contingency to cover potential unforeseen items discovered while crews replace internal piping and address flow problems.
Public‑safety and operational context
Staff said the tanks are pre‑stressed concrete and one set of piping showed corrosion consistent with the end of the pipes’ useful life. Work described at the meeting includes replacing corroded piping and upgrading internal flow arrangements so water circulates more evenly within the tanks. The contractor also completed exterior coating work; the approved funds are directed to internal repairs and piping upgrades identified by the inspection.
Commission direction and documentation
Commissioners approved the purchase order and asked staff to provide the underlying inspection report and cost breakdown at the Feb. 25 meeting so the record clearly shows what the inspection found and how the repair amount was calculated.
Why it matters
Water‑storage tanks are critical to distribution and firefighting pressure. Staff said the repairs are time‑sensitive and that the city is operating with limited tank redundancy while work proceeds. The contingency was requested to avoid delaying necessary repairs if crews encounter additional deficiencies inside the tanks.
Speakers and vote
Public Works Director Sam Mayer presented the findings and recommendation. The motion passed 5–0.
Ending
Staff will place the Crom inspection report and invoices on the Feb. 25 agenda and proceed with the repair work once the administrative items are completed.
