Poston Butte principal outlines school achievements, improvement plan and path to an A rating

Poston Butte High School administrators and student leaders presented school achievements and a plan to improve the school's letter grade during the Florence Unified School District Governing Board meeting Jan. 14.
Student body president Stella Bach reviewed athletic and extracurricular accomplishments, including football, volleyball, cross country, wrestling and band milestones, and noted student commitments and tournament placements. Principal Eddie Lopez and assistant principal Dr. Burkland presented school data and a multi-faceted plan to increase the school rating from a B toward an A.
Dr. Burkland said Poston Butte is "6 points away from being an A rated school" and explained the components the state uses: proficiency, growth, the College and Career Readiness Index (CCRI) and graduation rate. He said the school has focused on growth measures and CCRI components that yield the largest point gains, citing career and technical education (CTE) completers, STEM programming and increased senior participation in the ASVAB skills test.
Administrators described several specific initiatives: expanded dual enrollment math offering (college Algebra and introduction to statistics) that can yield college credit, increased efforts to have seniors complete FAFSA, use of the Albert.io test-preparation tool to improve proficiency test familiarity, and a newly available Arizona Art Proficiency Seal with eight students working on portfolios in dance, art and theater. Dr. Burkland also reported a 100% graduation rate for the cohort referenced and strong growth measures in ELA and math benchmarks.
Board members asked for logistics for the art seal showcase; administrators said the event will occur after March and the district will send invites. Administrators asked the board for continued support for classroom resources and partnership with Cabot for CTE training. The presentation closed with recognition of employees and students of the month.
