Resident objects to mural at former indoor gun range; building department issues notice of violation

A Roseville resident told the City Council on July 8 he objects to artwork painted on the north exterior wall of a business that previously operated as an indoor gun range.
Daniel Wazoric (26721 Oak) said the mural is "not in keeping with Roseville" and that it is "unwelcoming to the public." Wazoric identified himself as a firearm owner and a concealed pistol license holder and said he supports gun safety but does not consider the mural tasteful.
Assistant City Manager Sexton told the council the building department is aware of the mural and that it appears to have been painted without a required permit and may exceed the area allowed for signage. Sexton said the content likely does not violate the sign ordinance under current content-neutral rules, but staff has sent a notice of violation regarding permit and size/placement issues.
City Attorney Tomlinson noted the city cannot regulate sign content due to the redesign of the ordinance; enforcement will focus on time, place and spatial requirements the city may lawfully apply. Staff said they would follow up with the complainant.
