Ishpeming council adopts skate park site plan; staff and council note potential parking loss and summer timeline

The Ishpeming City Council voted to adopt the proposed site plan for the city's skate park.

City staff told council the approved plan would remove parking in the northern area adjacent to the proposed park; one layout option would remove about 12 parking spaces south of a marked line, while an alternative configuration would remove fewer spaces and leave the remaining four in place. Staff noted the area had formerly been used as an MDOT park-and-ride but that service had been discontinued for lack of use.

A staff member who presented the site plan said previous council discussions had covered the project in detail but the formal site plan approval was not found in the record, so the item was brought forward to "cross the t's and dot the i's." Councilor motioned to approve the plan "as presented," and the motion passed on a voice vote.

Construction timing: staff reported ongoing coordination with American Ramp, the company contracted to build the park. American Ramp had been targeting July for arrival; the presenter said the vendor had continued communications but had not given a firm confirmation and that council should now "plan for early August," while noting that a July start would be possible.

Staff described one construction approach to the adjacent tennis courts: instead of digging and attempting to recompact the tennis court surface after pipe work, staff said contractors advised removing the ends of the fence and blacktopping the courts at a reduced price. Council was told that decision could be revisited later and that specific tennis-court work remains a separate discussion.
