Committee approves commemorative and initiation of permanent renaming to honor Dr. Amos C. Brown

The Land Use and Transportation Committee unanimously voted to forward two companion items that would rename the 800 block of Pierce Street (from Fulton to Golden Gate Avenue) in honor of Reverend Doctor Amos C. Brown.
Supervisor Bridal Mahmood introduced agenda items 3 and 4, which together begin the public-survey process for a permanent renaming and, separately, add a commemorative street name sign reading "Doctor Amos C. Brown Way" to remain in place unless and until a permanent renaming is adopted. "Item 3, the resolution of intention begins the surveying process to be undertaken by public works to get feedback from residents and property owners of 2 blocks of Pierce from Fulton to the Golden Gate Avenue," Mahmood said. He described Dr. Brown's nearly 50-year tenure as senior pastor of Third Baptist Church and listed roles Brown has held in civic and religious organizations.
Jason Wong of the County Surveyor's Office at the Department of Public Works was present to answer technical questions about the survey process. Mahmood said the commemorative sign is intended to be installed ahead of a longer permanent renaming process; the Department of Public Works will survey residents and property owners and provide a letter summarizing results before any final street-name change is introduced.
Anthony Wagner, a deacon at Third Baptist Church, and Reverend Devon Jerome Crawford, the executive pastor who will succeed Dr. Brown, both addressed the committee in support of the renaming. Reverend Brown spoke and said, "I accept this honor with profound gratitude," and thanked his wife and congregation.
Public commenters at the hearing included members and leaders of Third Baptist Church and other community members who recounted Brown's programs — including tutoring, music education, and refugee resettlement — and called the renaming a fitting recognition. No speakers registered in opposition.
Supervisor Mahmood moved that items 3 and 4 be sent as committee reports to the Board of Supervisors with a positive recommendation. The committee voted Chen, aye; Mahmood, aye; Melgar, aye. The clerk recorded three ayes and the motion passed.
Ending: The committee advanced both a resolution of intention to begin the public-survey process for a permanent renaming and a separate commemorative-name designation to the Board for consideration; further action by the Board and a public-survey process by Public Works are required to make any permanent change.
