Representative Sarah Fowler Arthur asked the Ohio Senate Transportation Committee to give House Bill 38 a first hearing to dedicate a portion of Route 87 in Geauga County to Dr. Stephen Tackix.
The sponsor told the committee that Dr. Tackix "dedicated his entire life to helping others and was a man of the highest moral character," and described his long service in local family practice, hospice visits and volunteer work. Arthur said Tackix graduated from Ohio University's College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1986, served as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve and worked at VA hospitals and nursing homes in the region.
Arthur said the bill is a reintroduction of prior legislation and that the earlier versions had drawn unanimous committee support in the House. She said constituents and the family have asked for the memorial highway and that a scholarship and ALS 5K have been established in his memory. "He routinely made house calls and hospice visits," Arthur said, and she called naming the roadway a way to honor his service to the community.
The committee took the testimony as the first hearing for House Bill 38; no vote was taken at the meeting and the bill will proceed through the committee process. The sponsor encouraged constituents who support the measure to submit testimony to the committee record.
