Bonner County commissioners approved a state and local agreement to design repairs to the Merritt Bridge over the Pend Oreille River and authorized an initial $10,000 payment to secure the grant award and move into project design.
Road and Bridge Director Tom Klavan told the board the county’s application to the Local Federal Aid Incentive Program (BRIDG E FY2024) was selected; anticipated total project cost is $3,660,000. The county must provide a 7.3% cash match on project cost. Klavan said the county’s total anticipated match will be $268,644, and the match will be paid throughout design and with a final lump sum before construction bidding; the first $10,000 payment is due at signing.
Klavan said the bridge is Bonner County’s longest bridge and requires steel piling rehabilitation and deck epoxy seal coating; construction is anticipated in FY2028–FY2029 but could be scheduled to meet program budget constraints. Commissioners discussed how to account for multi‑year match commitments in future budgets and were told the county’s budget process will designate funding in the fiscal year when construction is anticipated and that Road and Bridge will include project timing in long‑range plans.
The board approved the agreement by roll call vote and directed staff to track and present future match obligations as the project moves from design into construction.
