The Surry County Board of Commissioners approved a refund of $278,818.29 to Altec Capital Services LLC on Feb. 17 after the tax office found duplicate equipment listings during the property-listing period.
Tax administrator Penny Harrison told the board the company inadvertently listed the same utility trailers twice—once under Altec Capital Services LLC and again under Altec Capital Trust—creating an overpayment. After department research, staff recommended a refund and provided a countywide and fire fund breakdown in the packet.
Commissioner Bill Goins moved to approve the refund. The motion passed unanimously on voice vote; the minutes record the board’s approval. County staff will process the refund per the tax office reconciliation and return the funds to the appropriate payees, with the board authorizing the action at this meeting.
The tax administrator presented the total amount and said the double-listing was an error determined after research; the board did not discuss further conditions beyond authorizing the refund.
