During the June 3 meeting, Wayne Police Department leadership presented awards recognizing officers for separate incidents in 2024: narcotics arrests, firearms recoveries related to a shots‑fired call, and a life‑saving rescue from a vehicle fire.
The chief said officers O'Garrick and Ozayati received commendation awards for a January 2024 traffic stop that led to arrests and the seizure of methamphetamine and a large quantity of pills. Officer Al Zayadi (also referenced as El Zayadi/El Zayate in materials) received two commendations: one for a November 2024 traffic stop that recovered two firearms minutes after a shots‑fired report, and another for a January 2024 incident in which he broke a vehicle window, reached inside a smoke‑filled car and pulled an occupant to safety; he performed CPR until additional officers and Wayne Rescue arrived. The chief described that rescue as a life‑saving award.
The department also noted other awards that could not be presented that night because recipients were on vacation; the chief said Officer Al Zayadi will also receive a Mothers Against Drunk Driving award later in the year for drunk‑driving arrests in 2024. Councilmembers and residents commended the officers for their service and the chief invited awardees forward for photographs.
