Evansville fire report: recruit classes, new safety-officer rank and one reprimand

Deputy Chief Garrett reported to the Evansville Fire Merit Commission on June 10 that several recruit classes are moving through training, a new safety-officer rank has been created with three initial appointees, and the department issued one written reprimand.
Garrett said recruit class 66-25 currently has four recruits housed at stations who hold national EMT credentials and are completing a 60-day apparatus shadowing rotation. Seven other recruits in that class are in the second week of EMT instruction and are slated to complete the EMT portion on July 25, at which point they will move into station placements.
A separate recruit group (identified in the transcript as class 67) has six students who are finishing the EMT portion on July 25 and are scheduled to complete Firefighter I and II training on Oct. 3. Garrett said the department plans a combined graduation for the four in-station recruits, the seven finishing EMT, and the six who complete the later training; a date and location for a mass ceremony had not been set.
On personnel actions, Garrett said the department issued a written reprimand to one firefighter for conduct; union officials presented during that matter and did not contest the discipline. Garrett also said Dustin Klein received a merit promotion to the rank of inspector.
Garrett described the newly created safety-officer rank and said the department appointed Chad Jordan, Chad Buttry and Joe Hall to the first three safety-officer positions. He told the commission the rank will be filled by merit in the future and that the position is being set up as a distinct rank equivalent to an instructor. Garrett said the minimum qualifications for the safety-officer rank include holding at least the rank of captain with at least two years in that rank and ten years on the Evansville Fire Department.
