Food service says free meals covered by CEP and kitchens ready for day one

John Oakley (food service) told the board the department is fully staffed, has new cafeteria tables at Los Amigos, new outdoor seating at Laufer and Sunnyside, and completed a refresh of the Ocotillo cafeteria. New kitchen equipment is arriving to minimize breakdowns, and the department will use surplus funds to maintain infrastructure.
Oakley confirmed the district will reapply for CEP, which covers free meals for students so long as eligibility criteria are met, and said the district plans to continue the program. He also described plans for staff training during the district’s welcome-back events.
Board members asked about student cleanup after outdoor meals; Oakley said the district provides accessible trash cans and staff supervision during outdoor eating periods. Officials said meal service will start the first day of classes under CEP unless federal or state rules change.
Officials did not provide dollar figures for food-service budgets or surplus funds at the meeting.
