Sunnyside details summer facility upgrades; district flags HVAC and roof work as ongoing needs

Facilities staff told the governing board that multiple summer projects were completed across Sunnyside schools, including gym renovations, new video boards and sound panels, auditorium improvements, repaved parking lots and classroom furniture replacement plans.
Dr. Murato reported that gym renovations occurred at Laufer and Gallego Intermediate, both high schools received video boards and scoreboards, and new sound panels were installed in Sunnyside’s main gym. Five schools (Liberty, Challenger, Gallego Intermediate, Mission Manor and Ocotillo) received parking-lot restoration or repaving. Rivera and Drexel had floor tiles removed and polished concrete installed in hallways and cafeterias. Summit View had five accordion walls replaced with drywall, improving roughly 10 classrooms.
The district said both high‑school auditoriums received renovations: Desert View now has a new stage floor, sound system, carpet and seating; Sunnyside also received a new stage floor, chairs, carpeting and painting. Custodial and maintenance staff performed deep cleaning and summer work orders focused on restrooms, irrigation and building maintenance.
Facilities staff described ongoing high-cost needs: Desert View’s cooling system currently uses a portable chiller expected to remain about a year; staff said the chiller, towers and chillers for that campus may need full replacement and that the district will work with the School Facilities Board (SFB) and the superintendent on those projects. The district noted it has open maintenance positions (one plumber technician, multiple rover custodians and groundskeeper openings) and said it expects to order classroom furniture for about 155 classrooms over the coming months as part of a five-year turnover plan targeting roughly 95% replacement.
Board members asked about roofing inspections and future recommendations; facilities staff said roof inspections occur twice yearly and that recommendations for roof improvements will be forthcoming.
