The Los Angeles City Council on Dec. 21 approved funding to bolster the multifamily housing inspection unit following the Echo Park apartment collapse, voting 10-0 in a special meeting.
Councilmember Garcetti urged colleagues to remember the collapse nearly a year earlier and to fulfill the council's pledge to inspect multifamily units more promptly when emergencies or complaints are reported. Garcetti said the inspection unit was not meeting the target response times of 72 hours for complaints and 24 hours for emergencies and that the approved funding would help close that gap.
The action provides funding to support inspections intended to protect residents in rental housing stock the council described as potentially hazardous without timely oversight. The clerk recorded 10 ayes and the measure was approved.
Councilmembers said the funding should be monitored and that inspection promises be kept in the year ahead despite fiscal pressures.
