District reports robust summer enrollments and funded university residential programs
Summary
Aurora East USD 131 staff reported summer program enrollment counts across preschool, elementary, middle and high school, described STEM and university residential partnerships, and said transportation and registration costs for university programs are covered by an after-school grant; staff said the grant will be presented to the Board on June 2.
District staff gave the committee an update on summer-school and summer-residential program enrollment and partnerships.
The presentation listed summer enrollments by site: Oak Park preschool and ESY (94 students), Dietrich K–5 (103 students), Hermes K–5 including ESY (229 students), middle school programs including newcomer and ESY (119 students), and high school and extension campuses (429 students). Staff also reported 99 K–8 registrations for sports camps (basketball or soccer) and strong interest in a STEM Ignition partnership with 265 K–8 students enrolled.
For university residential experiences, staff said 75 students were selected across middle and high school programs. Northern Illinois University programs will host 24 middle school students (STEAM/robotics/green energy) and 19 high-school students in options including sustainability, speech, sports fabrication and forensics. The University of Illinois will host 18 students in a residential music camp and 14 students in a Fine and Applied Arts intensive (acting, comics, dance, fashion, graphic design, photography, printmaking, painting, drawing and theater tech). Staff shared a thank-you note from a previous participant praising the experience.
Staff said transportation and registration for the university residential experiences are paid using funds set aside in the after-school grant; they reported that the after-school grant package will be presented to the Board for a vote on June 2. Summer-school registration was reported as closed because rosters and staffing had been finalized, though staff said they would consider late concerns on a case-by-case basis.
The committee record shows no committee vote; staff said the grant-related items and several summer-program decisions will be presented to the Board on June 2 for approval.
