Waco ISD board approves change order to include asbestos abatement in Waco High demolition

"It's in our best interest for Rogers O'Brien to handle this all in one with the rest of the demolition," the staff member said.
The change order moves the project into a demolition phase the district forecast will be finished in the early fall. The staff member described a phased approach: abatement work in older parts of the facility while demolition begins on the gym end of the campus, nearest Fourth Street, and proceeds toward the new building. She said air-quality testing will be done during the abatement process.
Board member Grant moved the motion to approve the change order; Trustee Patton seconded. The chair called for the voice vote; the motion passed with the ayes recorded and no opposition.
The staff member told trustees that some asbestos material is bonded to building fabric and would be more expensive to remove if handled separately, which was a key reason for folding abatement into the contractor's scope. The district described the approval as a milestone that begins coordinated moving and demolition work and that departments are meeting to coordinate which items will be relocated and which will remain in archives.
Meeting discussion included time-frame questions from trustees; staff said demolition-and-abatement sequencing will continue through the summer and into early fall, with final demolition work concluding several months after abatement is completed. No additional board action was taken at the meeting beyond approving the change order.
