District highlights 21-year monitoring, seeks Basin 162 integration with Nevada Water Initiative

District staff and quality-assurance contractors described progress on the Nye County Water District’s ground-level monitoring program and discussed the Nevada Water Initiative, a Division of Water Resources statewide effort to recalculate basin budgets.
Staff described a 21-year ground-level monitoring dataset (collected using methodologies compatible with the Division of Water Resources and Desert Research Institute), which District staff and contractors said is mergeable with the state’s Nevada Water Initiative data. The District’s quality-assurance contractor (Kathy Gilmore, noted in the agenda) and monitoring staff (Mr. Klinky) said the dataset is being curated so it can be used in future basin-yield calculations and engineering work.
The District manager told the board he had lobbied to prioritize Basin 162 for the Nevada Water Initiative because of its vulnerability and because District monitoring is already compatible with Division methods. Board members said a finalized yield determination from the Initiative would be central to updating the Basin 162 Groundwater Management Plan and to local budgeting and development decisions.
Staff emphasized that the Initiative’s work—used as the basis to recalculate sustainable yield—would provide the final determination of Basin 162 yield and that when completed it would be the technical basis for master planning and budget assumptions. The board thanked Division staff for outreach and requested a letter of appreciation and continued cooperation.
