The City Council authorized the acceptance of a $1,667,538 pre‑disaster mitigation grant earmarked for sewer separation work in the Martin Drain District and approved a city match of $1,022,887 at its Dec. 2 meeting.
Denise Pike, Community & Development director, told council the grant is a congressional directed project originally requested through Congressman John James. The engineering estimate for the project — storm sewer separation on Alexander Street between Little Mack and Manhattan — is $2,690,425. The council approved using a proposed $1,022,887 from the Clean Lake Saint Clair Initiative Fund to meet the city’s required 38 percent match.
Pike said the project is anticipated to begin in spring–summer 2025. Councilmember Rusey asked that the city attorney review the state grant agreement; city staff confirmed legal review has been completed. Councilmember Karen thanked Congressman James and others for securing external funding and noted the project is the first of several planned storm/sewer separation efforts in the Martin Drain District.
Council voted to accept the grant, authorize the city manager to sign the grant agreement, and allocate the matching funds from the Clean Lake Saint Clair Initiative Fund.
