McFarland schools outline classroom uses and safeguards for artificial intelligence tools

Staff emphasized ethics and instruction: they recommended integrating AI instruction into existing courses rather than creating a separate AI course, reminded teachers and students about academic honesty policies, and described vendor guardrails in selected tools (for example, the presenters said Khan products include content filters and usage policies). The presenters noted the district has provided staff training (including a 20‑hour teacher group last year with modules on AI) and that special education and other staff will receive additional targeted training.
Board members asked about labeling AI‑generated content and about equitable access. Staff said Wisconsin law and national proposals vary; the district has chosen to make vetted AI tools available on district devices to ensure all students have access. Presenters said the district is monitoring policy developments and will continue training and data‑driven pilots.
