Council to host Jan. 27 boards, commissions and committees workshop at Dowd Center

The Monroe City Council on Jan. 14 voted to call a special workshop for boards, commissions and committees to be held Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Dowd Center Theater.
Council members described the workshop as a public opportunity to learn about available citizen roles, provide training on governance and Robert's Rules and align committee activities with the council's vision. The mayor said the event would "encourage residents, first and foremost, to get involved by showcasing the opportunities that they have to serve" and would also support current committee members with training.
Council members suggested a format that includes an initial plenary session and breakouts so prospective volunteers can ask specific committees about duties, time expectations and the application process. Staff said the meeting will be open to the public and recommended using council chairs and legal staff to clarify responsibilities and the application process. The council approved a motion to call the special meeting and asked chairs to help promote the event.
The workshop is intended to both recruit new volunteers and to provide continuing governance training for seated committee members. Staff will publicize application procedures and committee descriptions and report back on turnout and any follow‑up recruitment needs.
