County contractor reports jail construction 'drying in'; lower-level slabs poured, work moving to interior finishes

"Mechanical and electrical underground is near 100% completion, and lower level roping is progressing very well," Brandon said. He told commissioners concrete masonry unit (CMU) bearing walls for upper and lower levels are complete, and crews have poured slabs near cell areas. Brandon said crews are blocking out skylights to preserve natural light and are installing vapor barriers and membranes as part of the building envelope.
Brandon described upcoming work as interior slab pours, completion of mechanical and electrical rough-ins, interior masonry and steel-stud framing, drywall and hollow-core roofing panels for the upper level. "Once the membrane and insulation are on, we're basically dry," he said, meaning the building will be weatherproof enough to proceed with interior finishing despite winter conditions.
Schedule notes presented to the board show site and slab work continuing through the coming months, with interior finishes and site work anticipated in spring. Brandon said the team is coordinating closely with the courts and the county point-of-contact committee to ensure jury-room access and to minimize service disruptions during renovations. He also told the board the county could seek an earlier start on renovation work in March if approvals from the building official and engineers align as planned.
Commissioners asked about cold-weather concrete pours and scheduling for jury facilities; Brandon and county staff said they are coordinating procurement of long-lead items such as cabinets and planning the sequence so renovations proceed without interruption once started.
No formal action or vote was required during the construction update; the presentation served as an informational briefing and did not alter previously approved project contracts.
