Sweetwater outlines 150th-anniversary events, fundraising and commemorative items

City staff reviewed plans and fundraising for Sweetwater's 150th-anniversary year, outlining a series of public events, souvenir sales and a foundation grant to fund a commemorative mural.

Jessica said the celebration will begin with a candlelight service at the depot downtown at 6 p.m. on Thursday; the Sweetwater Elementary School students will sing and the 150th committee will be introduced. Staff described a schedule of events that includes a Founders Day mini-festival in April, an indoor concert in February, monthly short videos on Sweetwater history posted to the City of Sweetwater YouTube channel, and a closing candlelight service on Dec. 8, 2025, the city's 150th incorporation anniversary.

Staff reported pre-sales of a commemorative photo book priced at $35 and sales of mugs, numbered commemorative coins and T-shirts. Jessica said the city received a $10,000 grant from the East Tennessee Foundation to fund a mural; staff will work with the Junior Main Street Board and local artists to develop a design in January and February.

Jessica noted the city has contracted with a carnival operator for the September fair and explained the carnival typically expects to make about $35,000; the city has agreed to make up any shortfall for this one-time event. Staff also listed sponsorships and donors supporting the 150th activities; as reported at the meeting, sponsors had provided roughly $27,000 in donations so far.

A handmade 150th quilt has been delivered to the city and will appear at anniversary events before being placed in the Sweetwater Heritage Museum. Jessica said monthly history videos will feature local interview subjects and topics; the first video, about local law history, was already posted and includes an interview with Lisa McClung.

Jessica remarked that the kickoff could be cold but that the committee hopes for dry weather. Council members and staff encouraged attendance and thanked sponsors and volunteers.
