Facilities committee updates: smart-schools delay, roofing rebids, NYSERDA denial for geothermal and athletic field master plan

At the board meeting the facilities committee reported multiple project updates and options for next steps on capital work.
Committee members said the district's smart-schools project remained incomplete due to a late change order and that device installation and testing continued while closeout documents were pending. Phase 1 capital project bids have been awarded except for roofing and veil glazing contracts; those glazing and roofing bids exceeded budget and will be rebid in January. Architects will seek clarification on glazing specifications (a request described in the meeting as an RFC) and the school attorney will be consulted as part of the rebid process. Committee members requested that revised phase plans and timelines be posted to the district website.
The committee reported the district's Track 2 NYSERDA application for geothermal at Chambers was not approved. Reasons cited included the small scale of the project (relative greenhouse gas reduction) and incomplete designs; the construction team will re-assess whether to scale the geothermal project to include more schools or to pursue more conventional options. The committee will present options and cost analyses to the district.
Consultants from LaBella Associates presented an athletic-field master plan developed with coaches and stakeholders. The plan includes a menu of field improvements: proposed synthetic turf at certain fields, grass-field upgrades elsewhere, possible track and synthetic turf at Crosby Field 4, upgrades to softball fields, stormwater/drainage work, fencing and restroom upgrades. The final report will include cost options and potential for building-aid eligibility. Committee minutes noted these graphics and the menu of options are available in the meeting library for public review.
Board members discussed whether to include the athletics work in a standalone capital project to send to voters; the facilities director said that would likely be the plan if the board chose to seek public funding, and he indicated he would prepare cost information before recommending a ballot proposal.
