Friends of the Truckee Library, JPA partners advance new regional library site and schematic design

April Cole, executive director of Friends of the Truckee Library, presented the library coalition’s progress at the Feb. 18 Good Morning Truckee event. The project is now part of a Truckee Library Joint Powers Authority (JPA) that includes the Town of Truckee, Nevada County and Placer County; the partners have been working on site selection, schematic design and early fundraising.
What the Friends reported - Partnership and design: The project team includes JKAE (local mountain architecture) and Group 4 (library design specialists). Cole said the design work used community input to size spaces around priorities identified in two rounds of outreach that reached about 4,000 participants. - Site update and parking: The group moved the planned site roughly 300 feet west to avoid eliminating the farmers market parking and to avoid relocating the Truckee-Donner Park District maintenance yard. Cole said the new location adds about 46 parking spaces and required a land transfer from Truckee-Donner PUD; she thanked PUD for expediting the land transaction. - Fundraising and feasibility: Cole said Friends of the Truckee Library commissioned a feasibility study that indicated the community could raise $7 million to $12 million in philanthropic funding and that Friends is well positioned to solicit early transformational gifts. She reported more than $500,000 raised in 2024 prior to launching a capital campaign.
Timeframe and timing notes Cole said the project has advanced to schematic design and the group will proceed with a capital campaign and further design work. When asked about a projected timeframe for the library and the adjacent Kids Zone, Cole said the Friends are “aiming to break ground in 2027.” During the question period, representatives of other organizations gave different timeline estimates for their separate projects: Jen Parker of Kids Zone said her museum project expects an earlier ground-breaking target, giving the impression the two projects’ timetables are not identical and should be confirmed with each organization.
Community priorities and programming Cole emphasized survey results showing continued strong demand for books as well as arts and culture programming. The proposed schematic images shown to the audience included a high-impact front entry, a community room sized to accommodate large gatherings and expanded children’s and teen areas. Cole said the design reflects community priorities gathered in outreach and that the team intends to align program elements to those findings.
What remains to be done Cole said the team will continue design refinement, fundraising and coordination with JPA partners; no construction contract or council resolution was reported at the presentation.
