Randy of GDI said the larger signs would use rough-cut cedar posts with Centra (plastic composite) sign panels and UV-protected finishes. He said cedar lasts many years with minimal treatment and that the sign panels and modern solar lighting are weatherproof. “The sign we’ve designed for longevity… the outside post will be of solid cedar rough cut,” Randy said in the meeting. He described newer integrated solar lighting that includes separate battery packs and timers so panels dim overnight to preserve charge.
Trustees discussed sizes for the Portage County Library sign and whether the larger face would be preferable for readability; they noted a larger face could be updated in the future by replacing or overlaying the face rather than rebuilding the whole structure. Trustees also discussed smaller hanging signs for neighborhood parks and athletic fields and whether to use aluminum posts with powder coating for longevity.
Holly said Brimfield would perform sign installation while GDI would install the lighting units. Trustees discussed staggering purchases versus buying a package now: some members favored a complete, consistent program now to avoid a long period with mixed signage, while others noted budget timing could push purchases into future years.
Trustees asked for final sign language and sizing decisions at a follow-up meeting; Holly said she would return with final recommendations and coordinate locations with staff.
