The South Carolina Public Charter School District board voted Jan. 9 to renew the charter for Felton Laboratory Charter School, a STEAM-focused K–8 school located on the South Carolina State University campus in Orangeburg.
PCSD staff presented a renewal recommendation after reviewing Felton’s academic, operational and financial performance. Kristin Farmer, chief of authorization and development, told the board that Felton “began serving students in grades K through 8 in 2015” and currently enrolls 277 students, with plans to increase enrollment to 352 by the 2027 school year.
The recommendation noted mixed academic results on state report cards. Farmer said elementary ratings fell from “excellent in 2023 to unsatisfactory in 2024” and middle school ratings fell from “average to below average.” The staff report also said Felton outperformed its residential district, Orangeburg County, in SC Ready ELA and math in 2024.
