Evansville MPO reports progress on multiple road, sidewalk and bridge projects; Walnut Street Phase 3 expected in August

MPO staff updated the Policy Committee on ongoing construction and design work across Evansville and nearby jurisdictions, including Walnut Street Phase 3, Third Street design, Epworth Road, Green River Road sidewalk and other projects; some closures and phased work were noted.
Pam (staff member) gave a round of project updates to the Evansville Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Committee, reporting active construction and near-term schedules for several local and state projects.
The most advanced local job is Walnut Street Phase 3 in the City of Evansville, where “the asphalt base is being installed to Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard,” Pam said, and crews anticipate “an August completion of all construction activities.” A notice to proceed for design on the Third Street project has been issued to Versus Engineering and survey work is underway.
County projects include Epworth Road Phase 1, for which Pam said the environmental public involvement certification has been received and the categorical exclusion (CE) was submitted for approval on May 29; right‑of‑way and engineering work are continuing with an engineering completion anticipated by the end of the month. Epworth Road Phase 2 is coordinating with an archaeologist and historian for initial sections.
Pam said Oak Grove Road Phase 4 will hold a public information meeting preliminarily scheduled for Aug. 7.
In Henderson City, the Green River Road sidewalk project had its bid opening on May 8. Two bids were received and the low bid of $406,843.97 came from K M A C; a preconstruction meeting was held June 20 and a notice to proceed carried a start date of July 7. The Waffen Lane construction project continues; Pam said the route is open to local traffic only while crews focus on the last section from U.S. 60 to Hill Mart Drive.
State and regional projects discussed included several overlay and intersection jobs on U.S. 41 and State Route 62, and multiple phases of Lloyd Boulevard work. Pam said Stockwell is open to traffic and functioning “very well at this point,” while other phases on Lloyd will require temporary closures—one eastbound lane of Lloyd will be closed for four months with periodic turn restrictions at Burkhart/Crosspointe during that time. Work on bridge decks, pavement replacement and utility coordination on several projects was described as ongoing.
Pam also noted that Purdue University recently visited some work sites to review innovations used in retaining‑wall and roadway work.
