Commission on Aging Forms National Night Out Committee; Seeks One More Volunteer

The Clark County Commission on Aging discussed forming a committee to participate in National Night Out and secured volunteers, with staff saying one additional member could join the group.
Amy Wooten, community planner, outlined the proposed committee and said it would begin planning for National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign. “National night out is an annual community building campaign that promotes police community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie,” Wooten said, and she confirmed the local date is Aug. 5.
Mike Anderson, commission member, described how the event typically runs and who attends. “What happens is throughout the country and in Clark County, groups usually work through their neighborhood associations, and there will be a number of sites that there will be tables set up for vendors and organizations to talk about what they do,” Anderson said, adding that some large neighborhood events draw dozens of groups and even musical performances.
Members discussed whether Aging and Disability Services (ADSA) or other county staff would host a table; Wooten said that was possible but not yet confirmed and that she would follow up. Ellen Rogers, commission member, asked how the event aligns with the commission on aging’s work given that many sites emphasize family- and child-focused activities; Anderson replied senior participation varies by neighborhood and in some sites seniors make up a significant share of attendees.
Four members volunteered to staff a National Night Out committee initially; Wooten said there was room for one more volunteer. The committee will meet to determine where and how the commission will participate and whether to coordinate with neighborhood associations and ADSA.
No formal decision was made about exactly which National Night Out sites the commission will staff; members said they expect the committee to recommend a plan.
