Brighton Trail segment moves forward; city aims for mostly separated path to downtown

Council members and city staff discussed the Brighton Trail project during the Feb. 4 work session, and staff said the city expects most segments to be a separated shared-use path that will eventually reach downtown Lexington.
A councilmember asked Director Burton about the final segment’s design and whether it would be on-road or a separate trail. Director Burton said the city is designing the Liberty Road segment inside New Circle and expects a separated path; the state will build a separated shared-use path outside New Circle as part of its roadway improvements. He said the design is uncertain around Winchester Road because the state’s design work there is not complete, but all phases up to Winchester Road are either under design or soon to be under construction. The section discussed on Feb. 4 would connect behind the existing Liberty School over to Liberty Road and through the park to tie into the state-built shared-use path.
Why it matters: A mostly separated trail would improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity to downtown, but the Winchester Road segment remains a design unknown that will determine whether the path can be fully separated.
